So, I get around!  And in some surprising places, too!

From articles and photography in Horticultural Trade and Plant Society journals, to a tenure with the fledgling, well-received (but now defunct) Chicagoland Music and Entertainment monthly, In The Mix, to links on other sites... bits and pieces of my writing and photography have trickled out into the press and the web.

Here is a link to The Plunging Necklines' page on the Chicago Local Bands site.  The energetic music and live stage presence of Meg Guttman and Jacqueline Krupka defies categorization - you will leave their performances breathless and smiling from ear to ear.  Be sure to check the local music listings for their many live performances.  The quote is from a performance I reviewed in 1998.

This is a link to the web site of musician Michael Droste.  I had the unenviable task of reviewing his 1997 CD, Life So Far...  He had been very persistent in his attempts to get the attention of In The Mix Editor-In-Chief Bill Piersall, and when Bill gave it to me with a stack of other CDs, he prefaced it with a near apology.  After all, the goal of the magazine was to print reviews of only the best local music.  If I could or couldn't do anything with it, at least could I give it a listen.  Others at ITM had already declined.  Well I listened, and for the most part, it was disorganized, out-of focus and stuffed with filler, so I asked permission to be negative with a positive spin, which is the best I could do with the material at hand.

So yes, the occasional "fits of brilliance" Droste cites in his glaringly out-of context cut and paste of my very, very mixed review (watch for the full context of my review when my work for the September, 1998 issue of In The Mix is posted), were evident.  And as painful as much as the album is to hear, the guy has potential.  Michael, consider this an open invitation to review your next effort!

                                               AND

Did I actually scoop Rolling Stone magazine on this?  You bet I did!  I was onto the Pine Valley Cosmonauts' tribute to the late Bob Wills' amazing, avant-garde western Swing like a hawk --- my reviews of the Cosmonauts' CD and a rare live show can also be found in the December, 1998 In The Mix.

The first link is a Bob Wills tribute site, and the second link is the Bloodshot Records site.  If you think there's nothing new in music you 1) listen to the wrong stuff and 2) have never shopped Bloodshot.  Among their artists' roster are some of the hottest, most talented and progressive musicians not only in the Chicago area but also nation-wide.  Check it out!
