All Images and Content © 1998 In The Mix, Reprinted by Permission. Founded by editor Bill Piersall, In The Mix was a free, glossy monthly which focused exclusively on Chicagoland music and entertainment. Unlike established competitors such as the Illinois Entertainer, which is more of an entertainment directory supplemented by reviews and features, and the Chicago Reader (and The Reader's Guide, a suburban version), a newspaper and directory which covers not only entertainment but many other relevant topics, it concentrated first and foremost on content about local, independent entertainers and establishments; another goal was not to sell or exchange content for editorial or feature space. From the onset, at least on the surface, it seemed to work, but execution of such lofty goals was complicated by haphazard distribution, difficulty in collection of advertising receivables, and publication delays. In the end, In The Mix left a legacy of features, critical reviews and photography which served its creators well, and now serves as a springboard for further exploration. Here are some of the features and photography of which I am most proud. Please pardon the odd fonts and grayscale inversions on the attached .pdf files - and please feel free to print or experiment with the view icon on the Adobe toolbar to suit your taste. I will at some point attempt to post more print-friendly text versions as alternates, but until then... My work is posted in reverse chronological order, and each opens and closes in it's own window. |
