BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE

Review and Photography by Robert F. Gabella

Unassuming, a bit hypnotic but nonetheless ready to rock, Canada's Broken Social Scene appeared onstage with the casual intimacy and accessibility of a garage band rehearsal, but with an alarming and complex musical precision which showed innovation, style and humor.

Their sound was complex from the beginning, with maybe a little Radiohead or Tortoise-style musical meandering to a distinct counter rhythm, which was just enough to disarm the listener into thinking that was the beginning and end of it all.  So just in time, they banged out the straight-ahead rock-'n roll of When We Were Boys.

Probably the highlight of the evening's performance was  a biting yet sweet rendition of I'm Still Your Fag, which was dedicated with timely grace and wit to "George Bush and the Vatican."

Though most widely known for their current album You Forgot It In People, which won a Juno in spring of 2003 for Alternative Album of the Year, and for two of their songs which were featured on the Showtime series Queer as Folk, this expansive band with an ever-changing roster of guest members excels as an innovative and engaging live act as well!
