The Drapes were the first band to appear on Schubas' outdoor stage on a hot and muggy early August day.

From the moment of their first note, this unassuming trio ignited the stage with a presence that couldn’t be ignored. Their music was infectious – the type that could incite riots effortlessly!  A blistering set provided an injection of energy that I haven’t heard in awhile.

Could I pigeonhole their sound? Hardly!  Courtney Love and Hole kept coming to mind as well as well as Credence Clearwater Revival, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Slayer & X.    Now is that an amalgamation or what?  These are more reminiscences than direct references, though - as The Drapes have a unique sound that defies categorization!

I can’t say enough good things about this performance!  The Drapes, whose name was derived from the name of a group of thugs in the John Waters movie Cry Baby, includes Andrea Jablonski on bass/backup vocals, Kevin McDonough on guitar/lead vocals and Bob Spellring on drums.  The present lineup has been together for about a year.  Kevin and Andrea have been together for about 4 years through several drummer changes.

The band's influences include metal, southern rock, punk, bluegrass and blues. They are best described as blues inflected metal rock with a

southern twang and energy to boot. They have now departed on a 6 week cross country tour which began immediately after the Summer On Southport appearance. I wish them the best and nothing but success.

Bottom line? Keep your eyes on this band!
