| I'd like to invite you to come take in the reinvigorated
Tres Hombres Songwriters Showcase.
Bruce Newlin hosted
this great event a couple of years ago at
Café Mia.
You may have been to "songwriter's events" that were
depressing open mike type events. Not with Bruce at the helm.
He always features terrific performers, a spot on schedule
and quality sound. Now, it's moved to the new
Ruta Maya on
South Congress and began this past Monday, January 6th.
I appeared with my producer/guitarist pal
Jeffrye Tveraas doing
songs from my forthcoming CD Speaking Only Mother Tongue.
Jeffrye and I will also be a featured act there
Monday, January
27 at approximately 8:30. The show starts with an open
mike at 7:00pm with featured songwriters playing from
8-10 pm. Ruta Maya's new location is 3601D South Congress.
So it's a new year, a new venue at a new location. Therefore,
I promise you new songs. And maybe a little new attitude. Who
knows ?
The mixing and mastering are also complete for my two submissions
to Ken Schaffer's
Safety In Numbers Songwriter's Showcase Vol. 5
They are actually old songs that I performed only once: at
my featured set at Whare Flat Folk Festival in New Zealand
in December 1999. |

Ms. Etheridge is a song I've always love
but never figured out. Yes, the title does refer to
Melissa Etheridge
but I can't really tell you why. It's one of my favorite songs, but
it's so cryptic that I've hesitated to offer it to an audience.
Blue Noise
is it's polar opposite...it's a really catchy, bouncy little pop song
(Jeff says it's been in his head since we recorded it and it's driving
him nuts) that is also an unabashed love song to my lovely wife
Patricia.
Anyway, check with Ken's
Safety In Numbers
website, for more info about the CD release. I expect to see it just in time for
SXSW
in March, but that's not a certitude.
This is the final CD in the
SIN series, and Ken went to a lot of trouble to see that I'm on it. Absolutely no one in Austin has done as much as Ken Schaffer to support
local songwriters and give them a good venue to build an audience. Many people talk about loving original Texas music, but for years Ken
put his money and reputation where his mouth was. A wretched economy,
and frankly, a paucity of great new talent, have regrettably put an
end to SIN's 14 + year run. I'm really flattered to be a part of it's
swan song.
