M'Amies
has been reinvented as a new wave rocker, while La
Vie En Rose is easily the most danceable song on the record with a groovy
disco beat. Merci Cherie starts as a 50's styled lullaby that builds to a
climax with Carlisle's rocker vocal capability.
Two songs stand out from the
rest; their unique sound and arrangements are evident of producer John Reynolds
(U2). They are a haunting rendition of the late Serge Gainsbourg's
Bonnie Et Clyde, and a synth-infused Contact courtesy of
Brian Eno on keyboards.
The Spanish styled Jezebel and playful
Sous Le Ciel De Paris could easily fit into a
Broadway play.
None of these songs need translating, as Belinda's understated, up
front vocals, passionate delivery and sweet harmonies add a modern dimension to
these French classics.
A second bonus CD is included with 4 songs in English:
Bonnie and
Clyde, I Still Love Him, La Vie En Rose, and If You Go
Away.
All in all, Voila is an impressive
and mature effort from Carlisle, and more than makes up for the 10 year
wait!
